The sudden collapse of buildings or part of them, due to extreme hazards such as blast or aircraft impact, highlighted how structures designed according to codes could suffer damage with disproportionate consequences with respect to the triggering event (Ellingwood 2006).This is not limited to buildings, but it is a major concern also for bridges (Starossek 2008).Therefore,new design concepts and methods are needed to ensure structural robustness of buildings and bridges against the occurrence of exceptional damaging events. In addition, damage involving disproportionate effects could also arise continuously in time, due to aging and deterioration processes (Frangopol & Curley 1987,Biondini & Restelli 2008).These effects are particularly relevant for bridge structures due to their environmental exposure.
