Standard anatomic imaging using CT or MRI has limited ability to evaluate the effect of therapy early in treatment.This can be especially problematic in the context of suppressive therapy or molecularily-targeted therapy.Changes in tumor size may not be expected early or at all in such cases.Functional imaging and molecularly targeted imaging hold the promise of measuring the physiologic response of tumors to such treatment.More rapid selection of effective therapies can therefore be anticipated and would be essential to more rapidly test drug effectiveness and reduce the expense of therapeutic trials and clinical treatment protocols.One functional imaging test, FDG-PET, can identify reductions in tumor metabolism during therapeutic interventions that are predictive of tumor response and improved survival.Data are now available showing that FDG-PET in early cycles of chemotherapy can accurately predict responders.
