In order to reach the required intensities Heavy Ion Fusion relies on the acceleration of low charge state heavy ions.In collision with residual gas particles these ions are exposed to a high probability of charge exchange processes.Such ions are separated from the circulating beam in dispersive elements and get lost at the vacuum chamber wall.At the point of impact an energy-dependent gas desorption takes place, inducing a pressure rise, which in turn increases the rate for further charge exchange processes.
