Recently,we are interesting in side-chain polymers(SCPs)bearing the side-chain of hemi-phasmidic moiety which contains a rod-like mesogen linked with a half-disk end group. To synthesize the hemi-phasmid SCPs,different main-chains have been employed, including polyethylene, poly(methyl acrylate),polyacetylene, and polynorbornene. The hemi-phasmid moieties can invoke different rod-like mesogens, which can be attached to the main-chain directly or via a flexible spacer. For all the samples obtained,we found that they could self-organize into the hexagonal or rectangular columnar phase when the size of flexible tails on the half-disk was properly chosen, and the dimension of columnar lattice could approach to 10 nm.The columnar phase formation can be understood from the nano-segregation among the main-chain,the rod-like mesogen and the flexible tails.Furthermore,on the basis of a simple volumetric argument,we notice that the supramolecular column in the columnar phase shall contain several chains laterally associated together rather than a single chain. The number of chains in the column is dependent on the volume fraction of the rigid component of the SCP(frigid).Increasing frigid leads to more chains involved in the column. This packing model of “multi-chain column” of columnar phase provides a way for controlling the SCP self-assembly in the condensed state, which may result in the SCP materials with some unique properties.
