Objective: TMJ ankylosis is joint fusion between the condyle and glenoid fossa. It resulted in reduction and obliteration of the joint space due to either fibrous tissue or misshapen bone.It causes severe limitation of mouth opening and damage of joint function.Surgery is the treatment of choice. However, previous literature indicates no consensus on the surgery for TMJ ankylosis.Surgical treatment has been advocated in quite a few ways such as, gap arthroplasty, interpositional material,or complete reconstruction with prosthesis.Long term post-operative intensive physiotherapy is essential to prevent failure. The goal of TMJ ankylosis treatment is to achieve adequate range of motion. Moreover, recurrence of the ankylosis should be avoided.Re-ankylosis is a major problem provoked by bone formation in dead space within the joint.
