Traumatic temporomandibular joint ankylosis (TMJA) is a distressing affliction which severely affects the joint function and life quality of the patients.It presents with facial deformity, mouth opening limitation and obstructive sleep apneahypopnea syndrome (OSASH).The therapeutic effect of previous treatment which contains merelyarthroplasty or orthognathic surgery was not very ideal.As a new method for the treatment of the traumaticTMJA disease, distraction osteogenesis (DO) can solve the problems that could not be solved by traditional operations.We used a two-stage operation method to treat 90 patients in clinical practice.In the first stage, distraction osteogenesis was performed, and the consolidation period maintained for 4-5 months to allow the complete rebuilt of new bone.And in the second stage,the distractor was removed along with arthroplasty or orthognathic surgery.
