A new evaluation method for the safety of cable bands on the suspension bridges of the Honshu-Shikoku Bridges at the maintenance stage has been established.A cable band is a member to connect a main cable and a suspender,and it is set with cable band bolts.Checking the tension in the cable band bolt is necessary after the completion of a suspension bridge and sometimes retightening the cable band bolts is needed because the tension in the cable band bolts reduces with time and the risk of sliding of the cable band increases.These works had been done based on the thought at the design stage that the resistance force by friction by tightening force of the cable band bolts shall be 3 or more times as large as the sliding force induced by tension in the suspender.However,these maintenance works about the cable bands sliding at the maintenance stage can be more rational based on the actual condition of the structure than those assumed at the design stage.
