Orthotropic welded steel-deck bridge rib systems,developed by German engineers in the 1950s for the structural systems of bridges,were first adopted for ship and naval structures.The word orthotropic comes from "orthogonal" for "ortho" and "anisotropic" for "tropic",so an orthotropic deck has anisotropic structural properties along the two orthogonal directions of its plane.The open (torsionally soft) and closed (torsionally stiff) rib-framing system for orthotropic deck bridges are alternatives basic types of ribs used for bridge.The technology of orthotropic deck is still growing around the world,however the life cycle analysis of this type of decking is useful to be analyzed during the design stage,as some recent example has highlighted anticipated warning failures.The paper describes the key elements to design orthotropic steel decking with life cycle provisions and details.
