Some studies have shown the effects of simulated rain on the population development of aphids or other tiny insects. The different behaviors and wettabilities between adults and nymphs of insects such as tea green leafhopper(Empoasca onukii Matsuda),confronted with rain has yet to be studied. In the present study,we compared the micro-motions of adults and nymphs of E.onukii when exposed to a layer of water versus oil.The adults always stood on the water surface with non-wetting body, while the nymphs abdomen touched water and some of their legs dipped into water. Both adults and nymphs drowned into the oil.We also designed a simple straw balance to measure the adhesion strength between the leafhopper and the water. The adhesion strength of nymphs to water was 108.58±3.54μN,which was nearly 28 times of its gravity, while the adults adhesion strength was only 37.24± 1.16μN,about 7 times of its gravity. The adults praetarsus are flat and contain numerous brochosomes while the nymphs praetarsus are fleshy and glossy. Both back and ventral aspects of adult abdomen have uniform scales structure formed by many small spikes and with brochosomes on the surface to repel water. It is very different for nymphs.Only the back side of nymph abdomen is a hydrophobic surface with mirco-gibbosities distributed and the ventral aspect is very glossy.
