To look for the elusive stem cell niche(s) in the lung and characterize the cells therein, the standard tactic is to use an injury model, in order to "smoke out" the stem cells from their secure "hideouts" within the adult lung.Inducing lung fibrosis where an agent such as bleomycin causes the alveolar epithelium to denude and degenerate rapidly, thereby creating an exigency necessitating the putative stem cells to be mobilized, is an ideal situation.
