Significant chlorophyll (Chl) patches concurrent with low SST and low SSHA in the western South China Sea (SCS) were observed in November to December 2001 after typhoon Lingling’s passage as revealed by SeaWiFS,AVHRR and TOPEX/Poseidon.Over the background level of 0.10 mg/m3,core Chl measured ca.1.0 mg/m3 on average in a 3 x 3 box near 14.75°N,115.24°E for this patch,of which the maximum was 1.2 mg/m3.Such an elevation in Chl was much greater than that observed in the well reported eddy off Luzon Strait (the eastern SCS),which was only 0.2-0.4 mg/m3 over 0.1 mg/m3,and that observed in the lee of Hawaii,which was only a change from ca.0.15 to 0.3 mg/m3.It was thus suggested that the typhoon might enhance eddy pumping to a great extent.
