Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs) are a class of priority environmental pollutants that have been identified for international regulation.Until 1977, PCBs were commonly used as an insulator in transformers and capacitors, as well as for other industrial applications.Their high chemical stability has made them a persistent environmental pollutant subject to long-range transport and bioaccumulation.The Word Health Organization (WHO) has identified 12 of the 209 congeners to have toxicity characteristics similar to2,3,7,8-tetmchlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD).These "dioxinlike" PCBs have been assigned Toxic Equivalency Factors (TEF) relative to the 2,3,7,8-TCDD isomer.The identification of these compounds is specified by EPA Method 1668, Revision A.The method requires confirmation using two different GC columns in order to completely resolve all 12 isomers.
