The cemented carbides consist of two constituent phases.The major constituent is tungsten carbide(WC)particles,which are hard and brittle.The minor constituent is binder metal cobalt(Co),which is soft and ductile.Both hard and binder phases are to some extent modified,in order to achieve certain desired properties to overcome their limitations.The hard phase is also modified by addition of Cubic boron nitride(cBN)to the WC–Co system.
