Transuranium elements,especially plutonium,play a special role in advanced technological societies.However,owing to their radioactivity and toxicity,the related research is severely restricted.One of the outcomes of this is the use of less toxic and less or non-radioactive surrogates for transuranium elements.These include early transition metals,especially Zr4+,lanthanides (e.g.Ce4+ and Eu3+),and the early actinides,thorium and uranium.The most central question is:do these surrogates actually mimic the chemistry of transuranics? In this work,we focused on the actinide diphosphonate system,for their importance in nuclear remediation and actinide separation processes,to answer the aforementioned question.
