美国现代高等教育和医学教育学家亚伯拉罕·佛莱克斯纳在其著作《现代大学论——美英德大学研究》中对高等教育教学、科研、社会服务三大职能进行了全新的阐释并对如何处理好大学与社会的关系提出了自己的见解,其认为大学应该与社会保持密切联系，科学研究应该适应并服务于社会需要。这些观点虽然产生于20世纪三五十年代,那些原本针对当时西方高等教育存在的问题而提出的批评性见解似乎仍然适用于分析和认识今天的中国高等教育,这些见解对于明晰中国高等教育的改革方向,不断摆脱制约中国高等教育健康发展的各种藩篱具有非常重要的现实意义.
