@@ Ambiguity and inverted causation are two intriguing syntax-semantics mismatches observed in Mandarin Resultative V-V Compounds (RVCs). Lexicalist approach to them is usually criticized for the theoretical and empirical problems arising in the interactive mechanism between theta-assignment and causative-role assignment in RVCs, as exercised in Li’s (1995) Causative-Hierarchy-Based Account and Her’s (2007) Revised Lexical Mapping Account. We argue that causativity in RVCs should be treated as a case of syntactic causativization and that the syntax-semantics mismatches can be better addressed from a syntactic causativization approach. We now demonstrate the syntactic derivation of RVCs with a widely-discussed example zhui-lei “chase-tired”.
