Implantation of first generation FDA approved coronary drug eluting stents in preclinical models as well as in clinical trials has demonstrated effects of the drug on vasomotor function of the non-stented reference segments as late as 1 year after stent deployment.In this regard, focal endothelium-dependent vasomotor dysfunction has been demonstrated in both proximal and distal non-stented reference segments of coronary arteries following implantation of Sirolimus (CYPHER(R)) and Paclitaxel (TAXUS(R)) drug eluting stents.
