Chemically modified graphenes (CMG; e.g., graphene oxide (GO) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO)) are usually prepared from graphite via Hummers method. This is an expensive and time-consuming approach with a huge environmental duty. We report the technical advancements in the synthesis of GO with a small amount of chemicals, without the requirement of centrifugation and maximizing the eyed of graphene oxide to 170% (by weight). CMG sheets were self-assembled to macroscopic films, fibers, hydrogels and aerogels, and they were blended with polymers or inorganic nanoparticles to form a variety of functional composites. Particularly, we synthesized ultrastrong, ulatratough and highly conductive CMG films and highly compressible elastic CMG aerogels. A porous graphene ceramic has also been prepared from GO, by making GO mud, shaping and sintering the GO mud into desired shapes.
