The huge expansion of higher education in China over the last decade has widened access and opportunities for a larger proportion of school-leavers who, like their parents, see higher education as an important if highly competitive route to improving their economic and social status.Though access to university is determined by the results of the school-leaving gaokao examination, students life chances are determined by several interacting factors. In this study, these were explored through a survey of over 1,500 students from six universities in Shaanxi,a big province in China in terms of HE institutes and resources. This paper analyses the similarities and differences found between rural and urban students in terms of their access to,and experience of higher education. From this,it draws conclusions relating to issues of equity and social mobility.
