Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is prevalent in southeastern Asia, and its turnorigenesis is rather complex.Previously we have identified SOX-5 (SRY (sex-determining region Y)-box 5) as a transcription factor that can down regulate SPARC (secreted protein, acidic, cysteine-rich) gene expression in NPC (Journal of Pathology 2008, 214, 445-55).In order to establish the correlation of SOX-5 expression and NPC progression, we analyzed 66 biopsy specimens from NPC patients by immunostaining of SOX-5.These 66 cases include 50 cases of undifferentiated NPC type (WHO type Ⅱb) and 16 cases of differentiated NPC types (WHO type Ⅰ and Ⅱa considered together).The distribution pattems of SOX-5 positive cells in NPC biopsy specimens can be classified as localized pattern and dispersed pattern.
