Anthraquinones, including emodin, chrysophanol, rhein, aloe-emodin and their glucosides are the major bioactive ingredients of some Chinese herbal medicines, such as Polygonum multiflorum Thunb, Rhubarb, and Semen Cassiae.Pharmacological studies revealed that all these components have antibacterial, antitumor, antioxidant, diuretic, febrifuge and cathartic effects, etc.Anthraquinone are often used as standards in the quality control of those crude drugs and their preparations.
