This paper describes the decommissioning and demolition of an industrial site formerly used for the manufacture of gas mantles containing thorium. In particular, this paper describes the radiological objectives established at the start of the project, and the practical radiation protection procedures used to deliver these objectives. This includes a consideration of radiation exposures (worker and public),as well as the strategy for management of radioactive wastes in the context of a major demolition project. This paper will include a description of: The radiological end-point in terms of residual contamination levels and the associated potential for radiation doses. The dose constraints established for the project, and the prior radiological risk assessment undertaken. The equipment and methods used to identify the pattern of thorium contamination on site. The agreed waste management strategy, and the waste categorisation methods and equipment used: for re-use of waste materials, disposal of exempt waste, and disposal of radioactive waste..The on-site radiation protection arrangements during the work, including measures to restrict the spread of contamination, working procedures,Personal Protective Equipment, and routine area an personal monitoring. The paper will summarise the outcomes of the proj ect in terms of meeting the initial radiation protection and waste management obj ectives.
