  Activity-induced long-term synaptic modification depends on the frequency of synaptic activation,a property extensively studied at glutamatergic synapses.At developing GABAergic synapses on CA1 hippocampal neurons,we found that coincident pre-and postsynaptic spiking also led to a persistent modification of the amplitude of depolarizing GABAergic postsynaptic potentials (GPSPs) in a frequency-dependent manner:Spiking at 20-50 Hz resulted in synaptic potentiation,whereas spiking at 5 Hz led to synaptic depression.This bi-directional modification of GABAergic synapses was accompanied by bi-directional shift in the reversal potential of GABA response.
