Approximately 6% of patients with breast cancer have distant metastases (pmBC) at the time of the initial diagnosis.The pathological characteristics of these tumors are unclear.The aim of this exploratory analysis in patients with pmBC, treated in 8 German breast cancer centers between 1998 and 2010, was to examine the specifics of pmBC, overall survival rate over defined time and to investigate the effect of new therapy options.Phenotypes were defined using the following immune-histochemical markers: estrogen receptor, progesterone receptor and human epidermal growth factor receptor 2.For examining of outcome the date of diagnosis was used to define 2 specifically chosen 5-year periods: 1998-2002 and 2003-2007.
