Early life stress (ELS) in the form of childhood neglect and/or abuse or early loss of parent has been recognised as a risk factor in the aetiology of depression. In addition, ELS is associated with reduced effectiveness of antidepressant treatment in adulthood. In preclinical research, it is possible to model a relation between ELS and depression. In rodents, early deprivation leads to long-term neurobehavioural changes similar to those observed in clinical depression, including reduced motivation for reward.
