Effect of Ultrasound Irradiation on Plate Ceramic Membrane Microfidtration of Fine TiO2 Suspension

  Membrane fouling hindered the wide application of membrane filtration.Efficient ways to reduce membrane fouling had been extensively studied.This paper aimed to reduce membrane fouling by ultrasonic irradiation during cross-flow microfiltration of free TiO2 suspension by cα-A12O3 plate ceramic membrane with mean pore size of 0.2 μm.Factors such as ultrasound propagation direction,cross-flow velocity,tram-membrane pressure and acoustic intensity were studied.Primary mechanism of ultrasonic irradiation during the membrane separation process was analyzed.Under the condition of ultrasonic irradiation,the steady permeation flux was4910 L/(h·m2·MPa) with the reversed permeate flow,and the steady permeation flux was 5597 L/(h-m2-MPa) with the cocurrent permeate flow.When cross-flow velocity was 0.06 m/s,ultrasonic irradiation showed little enhancement effect when tram-membrane pressure was in the range of 0.04~0.10 MPa.However,when the cross-flow velocity was about 0.5 m/s,the permeation flux could be enhanced,and lower tram-membrane pressure showed more obvious effect.The optimization diameter was that the acoustic intensity was 0.16 W/cm2,cross-flow velocity was 0.5 m/s and the trans-membrane pressure was 0.04 MPa.In addition,if the acoustic intensity was too high,ultrasonic irradiation showed little enhancement effect.It could be attributed to the fact that increasing acoustic intensity enhanced the removal of cake layer,but more fine particles might block on the membrane pore due to the collapse of cavitation bubbles [1].Thus,there might be an optimum acoustic intensity during microfiltration of fine particle suspension.
