Phlogotettix was earlier placed under the tribe Fieberiellini of Deltocephalinae.Zhaniser and Dietrich (2010), based on molecular and morphological data, showed that Phlogotettix is closely related to Scaphoideus and Osbornellus, and its position is quite distant from the Platymetopius group.They treated the Phlogotettix as an unplaced genus in Deltocephalinae along with other genera previously placed in Scaphoideini.
