Drug-eluting stent technology has progressed significantly, and improvements in stent platforms and coat technology require advances in the models and methods used to evaluate next generation stents.Improvements in stent platform design and composition have resulted in stents with lower recoil, greater conformability and thinner struts.Strut coverage and endothelialization can be evaluated in vivo in a rabbit model, however, the use of cellular assays can help detect differences or establish equivalence of new materials to well-characterized materials on a smaller, more specific scale, allowing differentiation of technology that is advancing beyond the resolution of traditional animal models.
