Microvesicles are membrane compartment that shed in increasing amounts from cancer cells.Microvesicles cargo contains different proteins, mRNA, miRNA, and DNA.We have previously reported the role of microvesicles in tumor progression through transporting mutant oncogenic receptors Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor variant Ⅲ(EGFRvⅢ) between glioblastoma cells, conferring a transformation phenotype for the acceptor cells. In addition, microvesicles could trigger the angiogenic switch in tumor endothelial cells, by the transfer of wild-type EGFR to these cells.Further, we found that cancer cells recruit microvesicles to clear tumor suppressor PTEN, a characteristic found only in cancer cells and not healthy ones.Blood microvesicles are considered treasure chests of biomarkers for different types of cancer including prostate cancer. We could detect many specific proteins expressed in microvesicles from different cancer cells, which could give a molecular fingerprint for the given type of cancer.Using blood born microvesicles, we could detect proteins that could have a diagnostic value for the given type of cancer.Furthermore, we could identify proteins and other molecules that have a prediction value for the cancer stage.
