China is struggling to transition its economy to low carbon growth pathway. The decarbonised energy supply system will play a pivotal role in facilitating low carbon growth in China as power generation contributes to nearly half of the countrys carbon dioxide emissions.More than two-thirds of existing electricity generation are coal-fired,making Chinas electric power sector the most carbon intensive in the world.Power generating capacity would more than double over the next 20 years. The development pathway of Chinas power sector has tremendous implications for global energy demand and carbon emissions stabilisation.
