Risk factors for pre-and postmenopausal breast cancer differ.Known and suspected risk factors for premenopausal breast cancer include high levels ofprolactin, IGF-1 and testosterone.Hormone levels depend on family history, early oral contraceptive (OC) use, late full-term pregnancy, high parity, and breast-feeding of short duration.How much each of these influence plasma levels of sex steroids and growth factors may depend on the womans single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in low penetrance genes.SNPs in the PRL and PRLR genes, microsattelites CAG and GGC in the AR, and deletions of the GSTM and GSTT genes have previously been reported to be associated with breast cancer risk.We aimed to study the joint effects of OC use, parity, and genetic polymorphisms on prolactin, IGF-1 and other sex steroid hormone levels in young healthy women aged 18-40 years.Questionnaires including information on reproductive factors and lifestyle were completed by 258 healthy women from breast cancer high-risk families.
