Under high electric field strengths, atomization of charged ethanol in vegetable oil can be realized. Processes of the disintegration stages were addressed in this paper by microscopic observations of drop break-up and atomization caused by a nonuniform electric field, and breaking patterns were analyzed in different electric field strengths. According to the observation, with increasing the applied voltage the breaking patterns were classified into the following categories: single drop pattern, single drop breaking pattern, branch breaking pattern and membrane breaking pattern. The drop diameter, breaking time and the total surface area of all drops were measured in every breaking pattern. Fitted curves and models were also given. The research for these breaking patterns provides a basis for developing an efficient transesterification technique.
