  Ketoprofen is a commonly used non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID).It exists in two isomic forms, namely, R and S enantiomers.While it is normally produced and marketed as the racemate, the optically pure S-enantiomer (dexketoprofen), which is the major active component, is also available and proven to be more effective.Moreover, US FDA, in the middle of the last decade, began to encourage the assessments of each enantiomer activity for racemic drugs in body and promote the development of new drugs in single enantiomers.As a result, there is a need to develop an effective method for the separation of ketoprofen enantiomers.High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) is the most used analytical method for the profen separation.Simulated moving bed (SMB) technology, compared with the single stage HPLC, is a promising alternative due to its continuous operation and ability to realize complete separation for mixtures with low selectivity.
