Basic fibroblast growth factor is a potent angiogenesis factor and a smooth muscle cell mitogen which is released from endothelial cells (EC) following acute injury.Basic FGF lacks an amino terminal signal sequence and does not normally circulate.Yet plasma bFGF increases in coronary artery disease and in micro-albuminuric, abdominallyobese type 2 diabetes. We reported heparin-binding, endothelial cell inhibitory antibodies in low bFGF plasma from adult diabetes having macular edema or nephropathy.Basic FGF and its low affinity heparan sulfate proteoglycan (HSPG) co-receptor elaborated in diabetic vascular injury may contribute to inhibitory endothelial cell antibodies.
