Adsorption chromatography is the predominant technique used in large-scale purification of bioproducts with ion-exchange being the most widely used technique.The chromatographer is faced with a variety of anion and cation exchange phases with a limited range of functional groups attached to a wider range of base matrices including sorbents for column applications,monoliths and membranes.The use of membranes as substrates for ion-exchange chromatography of biopolymers offers potential for exploitation of the very high usable flow rates and hence throughput potential that these units can sustain.
