To Promote a New Gatekeeper Model in Taiwan: Preliminary Acceptance Rate in Three Different Groups

  Background: QPR (question, persuade, and refer) designed by Paul Quinnett has been the golden model of gatekeeper for suicide prevention in the world since 1995.However, QPR was developed in Western culture.In Taiwan, a new gatekeeper model, BHC-5L (being happiness catchers-looking, listening, learning, loving, and living) has been developed for Eastern culture by New Taipei City Government, Chung Shan Medical University, and Mackay Memorial Hospital.The study hopes to understand the preliminary acceptance rate of the gatekeepers in three different groups.Methods: Based on the previous programs to construct the model and to train the trainers, we designed 3 different lectures of BHC-5L for community, school, and workplace.The manager of BHC-5L arranged the trainers to offer one hour lecture among three different groups from September to November 2010.After the lectures, all gatekeepers had to complete the 10-item test by the highest score as 100 point for evaluating the efficiency and to score the acceptance rate by the highest satisfied as 5 point and the lowest satisfied as 1 point.All the data were analyzed using SPSS 18.0.Results: There were 55 lectures of BHC-5L including 28 in communities, 14 in school, and 13 in workplace.Total gatekeepers were 6461.The means of the 10-item test were 79.08 in community, 79.79 in school, and 84.46 in workplace.The means of acceptance rate were 4.32 in community, 3.85 in school, and 4.31 in workplace.Conclusion: The gatekeepers in community and workplace felt more satisfied than school to the lectures of BHC-5L.It means that we have to modify the lecture of BHC-5L in school.However, all 3 lectures of BHC-5L offered the necessary knowledge of suicide prevention to all gatekeepers.The study will help us to create the new gatekeeper model in Eastern culture.
