304 stainless steel,316L stainless steel and 316NG stainless steel are conventional materials of primary pipe in nuclear power plants. The present work is to summarize the acoustic emission(AE)characteristics in the process of pitting corrosion of 304 stainless steel, intergranularcorrosion of 316L stainless steel and weldmentsof 316NG stainless steel. The results show that pitting corrosion of 304 stainless steel undergoes from slow growth to rapid growth to steady growth and the amplitude of AE signals in the corrosion process ranges from 35 dB to 50 dB.The intergranularcorrosion of 316L stainless steel comprises three phases of the initialcorrosion phase, the steadycorrosion phase and the rapid corrosion phase. The amplitude of AE signals ranges from 25 dB to 27 dB in the initialcorrosion phase,27 dB to 30 dB in the steadycorrosion phase and31 dB to 34 dB in the rapidcorrosion phase. The intergranularcorrosion of weldments of 316L stainless steel consists of the initialcorrosion phase and the rapid corrosion phase. The amplitude of AE signals ranges from 37 dB to 40 dB in the initialcorrosion phase and 45 dB to 50 dB in the rapidcorrosion phase. The work also discussed the current shortcomings and problems of research. At last we proposed the coming possible research topics and directions.
