  Polycaprolactone(PCL)was grafted to TEMPO-oxidized nanocellulose(TONC)by means of a ring-opening polymerization.Carboxyl groups on the surface of TONC could initiate the grafting of PCL.The incorporation of PCL chains increased the thermal stability and hydrophobicity of TONC,while the crystallinity decreased slightly.TONC and PCL grafted TONC(PTONC)were subsequently incorporated into the segmented polyurethane matrix(CLPU)as fillers.The grafted PCL chains created co-continuous phase between the PTONC elements and CLPU matrix,and thus improved the matrix-filler interface adhesion.PTONC showed favorable dispersibility in CLPU although increasing agglomeration could also be observed at higher loadings.The incorporation of both unmodified TONC and PCL grafted PTONC improved the formation of hydrogen bondings with CLPU matrix.Thus,increased storage modulus and Youngs modulus were observed for all the nanocomposites.The reinforcement of PTONC was close to the unmodified TONC at a low content(< 3 wt%).Furthermore,the addition of PTONC promoted the micro-phase separation of the matrix,leading to lower decrease in the loss factor and elongation at break for the nanocomposites filled with PTONC compared with those filled with unmodified TONC.Thus,using PTOCN as reinforcement could enhance the mechanical properties of CLPU matrix as well as preserve its ductility.
