All known positive-strand RNA viruses modify the intracellular membranes of the host cells to create specific membrane structures or mini-organelles for virus replication. The replication sites of alphaviruses and many other animal and plant viruses consist of numerous bulb-shaped membrane invaginations, also known as spherules, which contain the viral double-stranded replication intermediates.
