Background: Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) as evolutionarily conserved components of innate immune system protect against pathogens of bacteria, fungi, viruses, tumors and others. Moreover, AMPs have major effects on inflammation in mammals by influencing diverse cellular processes containing cytokine release, chemotaxis, antigen presentation, angiogenesis and wound healing. As the problem of antibiotics resistance is growing, AMPs are considered to be the promising substitute for antibiotics. So far, more than 2400 mature and active antimicrobial peptides of different origins have been identified and some have entered clinical phase. Thus a series of databases dedicated to AMPs in general or specific sources have been established to store data and provide functions of query, statistics, prediction, sequence alignment and design.
