Background: Suicide has been the ninth leading cause of death in Taiwan for more than a decade. This study is intended to explore and identify the contributing factors to suicide in Taiwan. Methods: Since there is no comprehensive official source for data on the causes of suicide, the researchers collected and then analyzed 2,155 cases of completed suicide reported in the United Daily News from January 2005 to December 2009.Content analysis was conducted to code the causes of suicide (i.e.relationship issues, financial problems, mental illness, undiagnosed emotional problems, and other personal issues), as well as demographic and background information (e.g.age, gender, occupation, marital status, family relationship). The socioeconomic data (e.g.gross domestic product, per capita income, unemployment rate) were collected from the Taiwan Governments website.Chi-squared test and ANOVA were then used to explore the relationships between socioeconomic indicators, demographic characteristics, and suicide causes. Results: Initial chi-square test results reveal the significant relationships between age, gender, occupation, and the cause of suicide. For instance, middle-aged males were more likely to commit suicide for financial and personal problems, while young adult females were more likely to commit suicide for relationship issues.Coming up, the researchers will examine the relationship between socioeconomic change and the cause of suicide. Conclusion: Recommendations for policymakers and counselling practitioners will be given based upon the research findings.
