Our research interests are focusing on the genes involved in the development of germ cells. One of our works was about the germ-cell-deficient (gcd) mutant,a sterile mutant resulted from the reduced number of primordial germ cells (PGC) during the embryonic stage. The gene(s) underlying the mutant was not known.Through a combination of transgenic and gene knockout techniques we showed that the deletion of a single gene FancL/Pog (proliferation of germ cells),a gene coding for a ubiquitin E3 ligase and functioning in DNA damage repair, underlied the gcd mutation (1).Deletion of FancL/Pog leaded to inefficient PGC proliferation rather than abnormal PGC migration.
