The emergence of AP Chinese is a major event for the Chinese teaching community in the United States. It not only improves the status of Chinese in the foreign languages of the United States, but also accelerates the opening of Chinese courses in elementary and secondary schools in the United States. Although AP Chinese is mainly targeted at high school students in the United States, AP Chinese can be seen as a project beyond the borders of the United States from any angle. AP Chinese courses and tests adhere to the five learning goals and three communicative modes set forth in “Standards for Foreign Language Learning in the 21st Century.” This set of concepts of foreign language learning not only brought about a reforming effect on Chinese courses in primary and secondary schools in the United States, but also caused a certain degree of impact on Chinese teaching outside the United States and other countries. This article examines the development of AP Chinese from different perspectives, discusses the relationship between APs outside of the United States and AP Chinese, and points out the impact of AP Chinese on Chinese teaching outside the United States.
