The stem bark of Boswellia dalzielli Hutch used in traditional medicine for the treatment of skin infections, boils, wounds, diarrhoea and dysentery was extracted in methanol, water and petroleum ether.The agar well diffusion method was used to determine the antibacterial activity on intestinal pathogens and dermatophytes.It was tested for toxicity on albino rats by injecting varying concentrations of the extracts through the oral and intraperitoneal routes.The small intestinal transit time and gastric emptying were also measured.The results indicated that the extracts inhibited the growth of Staph aureus, E.coli and P.aeruginosa to varying degrees.None of the extracts had activity against Epidermophyton rubrum and Aspergillus niger.The observed antibacterial activities were believed to be due to the presence of bioactive compounds which were identified in the extract.
