  宾夕法尼亚大学由发明家富兰克林创办,在他倡导下宾夕法尼亚大学成为通识教育课程萌芽较早的美国几所高校之一。自18世纪中叶到今天,通识教育课程作为学校的战略地位和特色追求,从作为实用的基础,到追求知识的融合,再到追求知识的永恒价值,其通识教育课程理念始终围绕“创新和实用”两大核心主题,带有明显的趋向理想、基于实用与勇于创新的鲜明特征。
