Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPAR) are members of the nuclear hormone receptor family involved in the expression of genes involved in several biologic cellular processes. There are three different isotypes of PPAR: PPAR-α, PPAR-δ and PPAR-γ.They are encoded by different genes and they seem to have different tissue distribution and function.PPAR isoforms bind as heterodimers with the retinoic acid X receptor to specific regulatory promoter elements unchaining different effects in gene transcription.PPAR have been implicated in lipid metabolism and insulin sensitivity, however, most recently and in special PPAR-γ has been involved in regulation of inflammatory and cellular reparative responses.PPAR-γ has been also identified to play an important role in adipocyte differentiation.
