Vitamin B3 is widely used to treat dyslipidemias and reduce blood cholesterol. However, a substantial fraction of patients discontinue this safe and beneficial treatment because of a strong side effect of cutaneous vasodilation, commonly called flushing. We recently discovered that VB3 may cause flushing partially by activating TRPV1, a Ca2+-permeable polymodal cellular sensor that mediates the flushing response upon eating spicy food.
