Eddy covariance measurement is the most direct air-sea fluxes of energy, momentum, and those flux results are used to evaluate bulk transfer coefficients to derive bulk fluxes of energy or momentum. However, the direct measurement of air-sea CO2 flux is only limited to the “closed-path” measurements. In the present study,“open-path” CO2 flux measurements are applied over open-ocean fluxes using a cruising ship including the ship motion correction to remove the apparent wind velocities. The open-path eddy covariance method is considered as the global standard of CO2 flux measurement over land surface. The difficulties of the application over the open ocean lie in the very small values of CO2 flux as compared to the CO2 flux over vegetations. The “Webb correction” is essential for the small air-sea flux and other accurate corrections may be required. In the poster presentation,The present status of the eddy covariance air-sea CO2 flux measurements are reviewed and several issues of the practical applications are discussed.
