Illicit drug users constitute a large proportion of the patient population contracting AIDS.This presentation reports our studies which determine the mechanism by which drugs such as opioids attenuate host immune function as well as exacerbate AIDS disease progression. The Simian AIDS (SAIDS) model is among the best available animal model systems for studying human AIDS.Using the SAIDS model,we have found that monkeys chronically treated with morphine and infected with simian AIDS virus have a faster rate of viral replication and mutation and a shorter life span than infected monkeys that have not been treated with morphine.
