Atleast 60—70%of health care decisions,from diagnosis through therapy and prognosis,are derivedform clinicaIIaboratory tests.In United States,federaI and state agencies regulate Iaboratory operations through variousmechanism,including Iicensure,certification,and registration.The ClinicaI LaboratoryImprovement Amendments of 1988(CUA88)regulations,set standards to improve the quality ofclinicalIaboratory testing in allIaboratories in the U.S.that conduct testing for the purpose ofproviding information for the diagnosis l prevention l or treatment of any disease or impairment of,or the assessment of the health of,Iire human beings.The regulations stratify the requirementsthat apply in various laboratory situations according to the technical complexity in the testingprocess and risk of harm in reporting erroneous results.
